Church Shootings & Your Clients

CHURCH SHOOTINGS & YOUR CLIENTS

The headlines are startling. The unfortunate truth is that with the current rate of mass shootings, many have been left feeling unsafe – including your clients.

Give your clients a feeling of peace of mind and increased safety in the current climate by sharing these important safety resources.

1. If they feel uneasy, remind them that these occurrences are very uncommon.
Those who are feeling afraid are not alone. The acts on one church often feel very personal to all church leaders. CNN recently interviewed a crime specialist to get the “truth” about church shootings which can provide some reassurance. "It's very safe to go to church on Sunday," said Dallas Drake, a criminologist at the Center for Homicide Research in Minneapolis. "There are very few incidents, but they are high-profile when they occur."

2. If they have concerns about their safety efforts, help them put more into place.
Church leaders should evaluate their current safety efforts to see where improvements can be made. According to Christianity Today, leaders can help protect their congregation by taking these key precautions:

  • Work with local police to review plans and capabilities in the event of an attack
  • Create a facility survey for police
  • Develop a lockdown policy
  • Make a plan with a crisis response team
  • Focus on incident prevention: increase safety efforts and early identification, take steps to reduce risk and provocation

3. In case the unthinkable happens, encourage them to plan for the worst case scenario.
It can happen to anyone – preparation is key. Active shooter training can help save lives. Formal training and safety resources are available through Ready Gov. Most importantly, everyone should know that if an active shooter incident occurs they should:

  • Run and escape, if possible
  • Hide if escape is not possible
  • Fight as an absolute last resort
